Rembrandt

In Leiden Rembrandt saw the light.

On July 15th 1606, Rembrandt van Rijn was born in Leiden.

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in the Weddesteeg in Leiden and lived and worked in Leiden until his 26th year. At an early age he was, together with his colleague Jan Lievens, laudede as one of the great painters of his time. Those were important years. He was taught the classics at the "Latin School" and then he decided to become a painter. Once he had finished his apprenticeship, he set himself up in Leiden as an independent painter. Many  masterpieces were created in his Leiden studio, where he also developed his famous light-and-dark technique. Rembrandt's parents are burried in the same church as Jan Steen and Gerrit Dou; The Pieterskerk. Jan Steen also worked in Leiden and owned a pub and Gerard Dou and Frans van Mieris were established here as the school of Leiden Finepainters.
