Eva van Hoogeveenhofje
Eva van Hoogeveen descended from a very distinguished family and thus had considerable sums at her disposal. It is likely that she wished to offer accommodation to people such as herself, that is, unmarried women (or widows), who did not have as much money as she had.
In 1652, after her death, the executors of her will bought a number of building plots. In the middle area of this ground two rows of six houses were built by the city architect Arent van 's Gravensande in 1654/55. The gateway to the Doelensteeg was not built until 1659. Here, as an example to the public, the "very chaste and praiseworth maiden" is referred to in a Latin inscription. A sheep, her family coat of arms, is also depicted. This sheep also reappears as a crowning motif on the water pump in the inner courtyard, which was built in 1739.
